Abstract

THE SENSE OF BELONGING TO TATAR AND TURKIC IDENTITY IN CENGIZ DAGCI’S NOVELS
Cengiz Dagci is one of the renowned novel writers of Crimean Tatar literature in the 20th century. This famous writer is a staunch advocate of Crimean Turkic identity after Ismail Gaspirali. In his works, he mostly writes about his struggle for Crimean Turkic identity. He is a writer full of longing for his homeland with a great sense of nationalism. The feeling of longing caused by a lifelong separation from his homeland has always resurfaced in his novels as a theme, and he showed the identity he has and the place he belonged. The sense of having no home, and separation from his homeland had deep influences on the writer throughout his life, encouraging him to write. He voiced his longing and yearning for Crimea almost in all of his novels. Not forgetting about his homeland, the writer did not alienate himself from his own identity and culture, and protected the values which constituted his language, land and own identity. Cengiz Dagci combined the concepts of Tatar and Turkic identities in his memory, and defended that he ethnically belonged to Tatar and is a descendant of Turkic people. In this study, we are going to show how Cengiz Dagci took cognizance of his belonging to both Tatar and Turkic identity, and how this idea in his mind was voiced through the characters in his novels.
